Information and support workshop for parents

When: Tuesday 14 March
Time: 7.30pm to 9.30pm
Where: Online
Cost: £5 per household

To celebrate Sleep Awareness Week (13-19 March) and the launch of the new VICTA Sleep Service we are hosting an online workshop for parents of children and young people with a vision impairment.

Getting a good night’s sleep for many is a natural activity that people do. While resting may seem like the most natural thing in the world for people to do, many young people have developed poor sleeping habits that can cause long term consequences.

This session will give you the opportunity to learn more about setting good schedules and helping your child to develop a good routine which will aid healthier sleep.

Sleep and vision impairment

One of the main factors that impacts the ability of people who are blind or partially sighted to sleep healthily is a disruption in circadian rhythm. Circadian rhythms are physical, mental, and behavioural changes that follow a 24-hour cycle. These natural processes respond primarily to light and dark and because it harmonises with environmental time cues, it is often referred to as an ‘internal body clock’. This daily synchronisation process generally poses no problems for sighted individuals. However, this is not the case for those with no or poor light perception.

This workshop is for anyone who’s children are currently experiencing sleep related issues which include:

  • Falling asleep
  • Staying asleep
  • Anxiety relating to sleep
  • Inability to wind down
  • Self-settling

The first 90 minutes of the workshop will be presentation based and we have allowed for 30 minutes at the end for questions.
